Former Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim has been transferred back to jail.

He was transferred back on Wednesday at around 1500hrs.

His arrest comes at the time when opposition figures banded together against the Government.

Nazim was sentenced to 11 years on charges of weapons possession. He had been serving his sentence in Himmafushi jail, when he was transferred to house arrest. He was transferred to house arrest for the duration of repairs to HImmafushi Asseyri jail.

At the time of his transfer, officers from the SO division were active near his residence.

Nazim's family reported that they were not informed of the transfer and that the transfer had occurred suddenly.

High Court had upheld the Criminal Court verdict and Supreme Court had thrown out the appeal, supporting the verdict of High Court. With this, all avenues for appeal had closed for Nazim.

His family had filed the issue in UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in February last year. The Group's verdict was in Nazim's favor, with an instruction to the Government to free him and pay him damages for the time he had spent in jail.
