Charges have been raised against an officer of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), accused of raping a 14-year-old girl.
The Prosecutor General's Office revealed that charges have been raised against Mohamed Ali, under the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Abuse Offenders.
The MNDF officer was arrested for blackmail and rape charges on the 22nd of last month, and is charged with "touching a child with sexual intentions".
MP for Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam brought the case to the public's attention, which prompted a statement from the security force.
In the statement, MNDF stated that the case would be investigated internally according to the procedures and that action would be immediately taken as well if the MP or the police had shared the information with them.
Hearings for a total of ten child sex abuse cases have been scheduled at the criminal court for Sunday alone.
