MDP, JP issues three-line whip for speaker vote
MDP has said it would issue a three-line whip for the no-confidence motion against Abdulla Maseeh

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said it would issue a three-line whip for next Monday’s no-confidence motion against parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh. 

Ibrahim Solih, deputy leader of the party’s parliamentary group, said the decision had already been made in a MDP national assembly on Wednesday, where it also agreed to pursue repealing the law allowing foreign land ownership.

He said the parliamentary group would officially announce the decision on Sunday, and that its members in Malé by 27th March would fully support the motion.

The no-confidence motion was filed in parliament on 8th March with 26 signatures.

Opposition partner, Jumhooree Party (JP) had also issued a three-line whip at a council meeting on Thursday. 

The MDP, JP, Proggressive Party of Maldives’ faction loyal to fomer longstanding president Muamon Abdul Gayoom, and the Adhaalath Party have signed an agreement to work within ‘parliament and in the political sphere to hold the government and state institutions accountable’, on Friday night.

After the press conference to reveal said agreement, Solih had also assured MDP’s full intention to uphold it.
