The 19th Parliament of the Maldives and the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament, "Lok Sabha", is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding.

Speaking at the last session of the parliament's term for this year, Speaker Nasheed announced that arrangements have been made for a delegation from the parliament to make an official visit to India from December 9th-13th.

He revealed that the delegation will consist of 15 members, with equal representation for all political parties. The delegation will be accompanied by the parliament's secretaty-general and counselor-general.

According to Nasheed, the objective of this visit is to encourage both parliaments to improve their democratic systems and boost the long-standing relationship between the two countries.

He also stated that the MoU will focus on establishing an official guideline to promote avenues for improvement in the parliament and the parliament's administration. Moreover, the MoU includes information-sharing, and providing and promoting democratic support on international platforms, said Nasheed.

Nasheed further revealed that work is ongoing to promote diplomatic relations between the Maldivian parliament and the parliaments of other countries. As such, he disclosed that the parliament has been invited to a conference for legislative bodies of Islamic nations.

Nasheed highlighted that most Islamic countries do not hold general elections to select their parliament leaders, and declared that the Maldives will work towards bringing about democratic changes to Islamic parliaments.
