'The Beyya', a local private company, has launched a campaign that promises to plant a palm tree for every t-shirt purchase.
The campaign titled "Beyya T-Shirt Movement" is being carried out in partnership with the country's national airline, Maldivian.
The campaign was launched at an event held at a ceremony held at the airlines 'Moonima' lounge at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Saturday.
While inaugurating the campaign, Speaker of the parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed emphasized the it's significance, and stating that purchasing a t-shirt from the company is equivalent to purchasing a tree for the country.
According to the company's representative , Mohamed Adil, a tree will be planted in the customers name in a random area of the country for every purchase, and the customer will be notified of the tree's details through email.
The "Beyya T-Shirt Movement" aims to bring back the country's greenery that is slowly being lost to climate change and other man-made environmental consequences.
These t-shirts are available for sale at all lounges for Maldivian airline. The prices have not been officially disclosed but media reports say they retail for USD30 (approx. MVR 462.30)
