Vice President Faisal Naseem has met with the relevant authorities to discuss ways to deal with Islamophobia and religious extremism in the Maldives.
At the President’s Office on Thursday, the Vice President met with the special committee assembled by the President to solve the issue of increasing criticism towards the Islamic faith.
Topics of discussions include counter-terrorism and challenges in maintaining an enduring religious community in the Maldives. The committee members shared information and the latest updates in regards to the work carried out by the relevant authorities.
In the meeting, the committee members and the Vice President discussed the difficulties faced by the authorities in dealing with such individuals due to the current laws, and pressed on the need to amend the law in question. The Vice President also emphasized the importance of creating and upholding a tolerant society.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Defence, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Higher Education, Minister of Youth Sports and Community Empowerment, Commissioner of Police and Chief of Staff at the President’s Office.
