Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Aisha Shujoon has been appointed to the Supreme Court.
The President presented them the letters of appointment on Wednesday at a ceremony at the President's Office.
The President has made this appointment under the powers vested in him under article 148 (a) of the Constitution, authorizing him to appoint judges to the Supreme Court after consulting the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and with the approval of the majority of the parliament.
JSC approved their names on August 26 after interviewing all candidates who applied for the vacant seats and the parliament approved them at Tuesday’s hearing.
President Solih nominated Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Aisha Shujoon after ratifying the 3rd amendment to the Judicature Act, on July 23, allowing the increase of the number of Supreme Court justices from five to seven.
