National Integrity Commission (NIC) has stated that it concluded police assault cases without receiving much evidence.

Speaking at the parliament’s committee on independent institutions on Wednesday, NIC member Ahmed Ameen said they do not receive evidence for most cases.

NIC President Ahmed Suleiman said their investigations also get stalled after audio and video evidence gets publicized.

Committee Chair Rozaina Adam asked why NIC did not investigate the attacks on journalists during protests, which were aired live on television.

NIC member Ameen said they had observed the protests and made reports, adding that their investigation onjournalist Hussain Hassan’s caseis ongoing.

He also said that NIC did not receive the support of the police service in 2017 and that the police had even denied requests for information. He added that, during election year in 2018, political influences had prevented them from investigating into the large number of cases that year.

The committee meeting had gone on for two hours before being closed to the public.
