North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam nominated MP Nasheed’s name for speaker
MP Qasim, who was also nominated, received 17 votes

Central-Mahchangolhi MP Mohamed Nasheed has been elected parliament speaker.

MP Nasheed, the former president, was elected by secret ballot at the first sitting of the newly elected MPs on Tuesday night.

North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam nominated MP Nasheed’s name for speaker while Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq Ibrahim nominated Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim.

Nasheed won with 67 votes while Qasim received 17 votes.

A five-member committee was established to count the votes. It consisted of Hisaan Hussain (MDP), Saud Hussain (independent), Ahmed Shiyam (PPM), Mohamed Saeed (PNC), and Ali Hameed (JP).
