MDP won 65 of the 87 seats in the last parliamentary election
MDP leader and former President Nasheed and JP leader Qasim Ibrahim won seats in the new parliament
Opposition PPM and PNC won eight seats

The newly elected MPs have taken their oath of office on Tuesday night.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won 65 of the 87 seats in the last parliamentary election, giving the main ruling party supermajority.

The opposition, Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) won eight seats collectively, with PPM receiving five and PNC receiving three.

Government coalition partner Jumhooree Party (JP) won five seats while Adhaalath Party failed to secure any seat.

Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) won two seats and the new parliament will also consist of seven independent MPs.

MDP leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed won the Central-Mahchangolhi seat while JP leader Qasim Ibrahim was re-elected as Maamigili MP.

The new parliament includes four female MPs, all from MDP. North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla and Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam were re-elected and Hisaan Hussain won the Thulhaadhoo seat and Jihan Mahmood won Hinnavaru.

215،053 out of the 264،442 eligible voters had come out to cast their votes in the parliamentary elections. With an 80% voter turnout, the Elections Commission stated that this is the largest turnout in a parliamentary election in the country’s history.

International and local observers have unanimously agreed that the parliamentary elections were free and fair.
