Three utility companies have been tasked with distributing 195,000 LED light bulbs to households.

The government is working with India’s Energy Efficiency Service to give out LED light bulbs to all Maldivian households.

As part of an MoU, the Indian government gifted 200,000 light bulbs to Maldives, and three state-owned utility companies have been tasked with distributing 195,000 of the LED light bulbs on Wednesday. The light bulbs were handed over to State Electric Company, Fenaka Corporation, and Male’ and Water Sewerage Company in a ceremony at the Environment Ministry.

Fenaka Corporation was earlier given 5,000 of the LED bulbs to distribute.

At Wednesday’s ceremony, Environment Minister Dr Hussain Rasheed expressed concern over the increasing power consumption in Maldives, especially in capital Male’ City, and said that the government spends over a billion Rufiyaa in electricity subsidies each year.
