Designating a picnic island for islands without public spaces that allow it is one of the new government’s first 100-day pledges

A ‘picnic’ island in Kaafu atoll for residents of capital city Malé will be designated soon, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said.

Speaking at a campaign event for the Maldivian Democratic Party, President Solih said that it is the wish of a great many residents in the capital that such an island be designated.

Neither the president nor the government has provided any further details; the island’s name and when the designation is to be finalized has yet to be announced.
