Nasheed says his speech was misconstrued
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has denied accusations that he encourages premarital sex.
In a tweet on Friday, Nasheed, the leader of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), said that he does not encourage such behavior.
He said he apologizes if a speech he had given on the dangers of hard drugs and the trauma faced by children born out of wedlock was misconstrued.
In a speech on Wednesday, Nasheed said that the solution to births outside of marriage is for single women to have access to birth control.
