The Maldives fully intends to harness renewable energy sources and much in this regard can be learned from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said.
President Solih on Monday met with UAE Energy Minister Suhail Mohamed Faraj al Mazrouei and with Foreign Minister Abdulla bin Zayed al Nahyan.
With Minister Suhail, President Solih expressed his government’s aspiration to focus on renewable energy in the Maldives.
Foreign Minister Abdulla had said that the UAE fully intends to support these aspirations and cooperating in renewable energy industries.
The UAE minister also focused on the importance of reducing carbon emissions in order to combat the impact of climate change and applauded the Maldives for efforts in raising awareness over the issue.
In December, Maldivian Tourism Minister Hussain Rasheed Hassan also spoke at a high-level session of the COP24 summit, sharing a podium with ministerial representatives of 24 other countries.
In his speech, Minister Hussain highlighted IPCC findings that if emissions continue at the current rate, mitigation efforts will be of no use in about a decad.
Minister Hussain called on the summit to adopt a ‘formal decision’ to implement the ‘outcomes’ of the Talanoa Dialogue, which was mandated by the UNFCCC and launched at the 2017 COP23 summit.
