Hulhumale’ Hospital has stated that it would be discharging an elderly woman as there was no treatment for her.

The hospital has refused to allow 71-year-old Hawwa Mohamed, a mother of eight, to stay.

One of her grandchildren told RaajjeMV that she had undergone a heart operation in India and was treated at the ICU for three months. Due to the difficulties of staying in India, she was transferred to ADK Hospital’s ICU and then the family worked to transfer her to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to cut costs.

IGMH had stated that it had no available beds, the family said, adding that the hospital also refused to admit her at one of its wards. They cited an IGMH nurse saying that there was no treatment the hospital could provide for her and warning that the gender ministry would be notified if she was not taken home.

Hawwa has been discharged twice since being transferred to Hulhumale’ Hospital and the family said that she is seriously ill and near-death but that the hospital still refuses to treat her.

Hulhumale’ Hospital’s media official Ashiya Salih said that they have always held the policy of discharging elderly persons they have no treatment for.
