Ex-VP Adeeb’s party expresses concern over his transfer to prison

The party called on authorities to consider his right to medical care a ‘serious matter’

MTD expressed concern that Adeeb was transferred back to prison before the date for which his house arrest expired

The Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD) has expressed concerned about their elected party leader, former vice president Ahmed Adeeb’s transfer to prison on Wednesday night.

MTD, in a statement, expressed concern that Adeeb was transferred back to prison before the date for which his house arrest expired, on January 27th.

The party also said that his transfer is in violation of personal guarantees given by Home Minister Imran Abdulla and that called on authorities to consider his right to medical care a ‘serious matter’.

MTD was officially registered in late December and Adeeb was controversially appointed party leader. The Elections Commission has said that Adeeb’s appointment is a violation of the Prisons and Parole Act.

Officers of the Maldives Correctional Service took Adeeb into custody at about 9:30pm on Wednesday. The former vice president, who is serving a decades-long sentence, was transferred to house arrest after surgery.
