President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has vowed to make Kandholhudhoo locals Dhuvaafaru residents.

The residents of Kandholhudhoo were transferred to Dhuvaafaru after the 2004 tsunami devastated the island.

Speaking at the National Unity Day ceremony in Dhuvaafaru on Wednesday, the President also vowed to solve the issue of lack of land in the island as soon as he returns to the capital city. Noting that there is no land in Dhuvaafaru, President Solih said he will begin work to reclaim land and develop housing in the island.

President Solih said that the government will also be enacting a law to monitor all things pertaining to natural disasters and to establish a national disaster management authority to minimize such threats.

He said that the government has finished the first draft of the national disaster management plan, which will dictate the measures to be taken to prevent and minimize the impact of disasters, adding that a disaster management trust fund has been established on December 16.

He also said that authorities will be keeping local reserves of essential products such as staple foods, medicine, and oil in case of emergencies in the islands.

National Unity Day is marked every December 26 to remember the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that devastated Maldives and other countries in the region.
