A beach especially designated for tourist use is to be developed in southernmost Addu City, the city council has said.

The Addu City Council decided as such after a meeting with residents of the city, in order to supplement their ongoing efforts to bolster tourism there.

Mayor Abdulla Sodiq said that an area for this beach will be set out and a contractor will be appointed for its development.

Sodiq said that an Environmental Impact Assessment will be conducted in January next year, and work to develop the beach will begin as soon as the assessment is complete.

Addu City is one of the most populated administrative divisions in the Maldives and harbours distinct places such as the Kottey Break and the Eedhigali Kilhi.
