Economic Ministry asks all cafés, restaurants to clear Hulhumalé beach

Minister Fayyaz said that the ministry has reviewed complaints of the beach being used by businesses in the area

The Economic Ministry has advised the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to clear all cafés and restaurants in the area to clear the Hulhumalé beach.

Minister Fayyaz said that the ministry has reviewed complaints of the beach being used by businesses in the area, while it should be made available to the public.

Fayyaz’s tweet announcing the ministry’s decision translates to, ‘After reviewing the case of cafés run near the Hulhumalé beach, it has become clear that they are doing so without permission from the HDC. We have today advised the HDC to ask businesses to clear the beach and make it available for the public to use before 31st January, 2019”.

Café and restaurants in Hulhumalé’s beach front have tables set out on the beach and prevent people who are not customers from using the space. Previous attempts to clear the area have been met with demonstrations from business owners.
