Former President Mohamed Nasheed has warned against making changes to President Abdulla Yameen’s ongoing project to change Addu City’s Equatorial Convention Centre (ECC) into a hospital.

Nasheed’s government built the convention center for the SAARC Summit in 2011 and re-designated the area into an uninhabited island in order to transform it into a tourist attraction.

Giving a speech in Addu City on Tuesday, Nasheed said that the best decision for president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government would be to continue with the project to change ECC into a hospital and that a new convention center could be built if it is what the people of Addu want.

While Nasheed expressed disappointment over President Yameen destroying the convention center built by his government, he said that his party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), only wishes to build and would never destroy anything.

He also said he expects the next government will quickly complete the hospital project.
