The Elections Commission (EC) has stated that the ballot papers used in the presidential election have been shredded and are now ready for incineration.

At a press conference on Tuesday, EC chief Ahmed Shareef said that they have passed the deadline for destroying the ballot papers and that the commission had kept them due to the Supreme Court case regarding the election.

He said that they will only destroy the ballot papers and files related to it and will store the other documents related to the election, including their report and the voters’ registry.

The ballot papers will be incinerated with the help of the military fire and rescue team.

Shareef also confirmed that two new constituencies will be added to the next parliament, increasing the total constituencies to 87. The new constituencies will be for Central Mahchangolhi and West Henveiru; Hulhu-Henveiru will be changed to Hulhumale’ constituency.

EC member Ahmed Akram said that the commission has decided not to accept the request to add more constituencies to Addu City.
