Elections Commission (EC) chief Ahmed Shareef has said constituency names will not be changed in the next parliament election but there is still the opportunity to add two new constituencies in Male’.

At a press conference on Monday, Shareef said that, while the commission initially expected to rename the constituencies, the planning section has decided not to make the change.

Shareef said the commission’s top priority is preparing for the parliament election in March 2019 and that they are now in discussions with the relevant institutions.

He said that they are also discussing potential changes to the Male’ constituencies and that while the commission is not legally bound to discuss the changes, it wants everyone’s participation during the decision-making process.

He said that a new constituency might be added to Mahchangolhi and Henveiru wards and that they will disclose details soon.
