Work is being done to hold parliament sittings next week.

RaajjeMV was unable to contact speaker Abdulla Maseeh or the parliament’s secretary general to get information on why the sittings were halted when another one would be held again.

However, the ruling party’s parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik told RaajjeMV he received information that a sitting will be held on next week’s Wednesday or Thursday.

The opposition coalition held a joint parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday. RaajjeMV understands that the opposition is also working to hold a sitting.

Parliament sittings were held sporadically and outside of acceptable standards after a no-confidence motion was filed against speaker Maseeh. Military officers have since been active inside the parliament building.

After the motion was filed, the Elections Commission declared that 12 opposition-aligned MPs have been unseated. While an appeal to reseat the lawmakers have been at the Supreme Court for months, there has still not been a clear a verdict.

After EC’s declaration, military personnel have been barring the 12 lawmakers from entering the parliament building.
