The Maldives Trade Union has asked president elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to ensure stability for local businesses by amending tax laws and auditing the central bank.

The union held a press conference on Tuesday evening, where panelists congratulated Solih on his electoral win and said they have always supported his candidacy.

Union president Fuad Zahir had also called upon the president elect to amend tax laws, as they currently allow the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) to ‘take advantage’ of businesses.

“When a dispute occurs between two companies, MIRA is known to intervene and demand that any sums due to be paid as compensation be given to the authority on the basis that the recipient is indebted to the state”, Zahir said.

The union had also asked that large projects be announced through public tender and for bidding processes to be strengthened, as required by law.

Further, the union had also asked that the current port clearance policy, which only allows delivery and collection of goods to be carried out after sunset, be amended.
