AP will back MP Solih for presidency if elected MDP candidate: deputy leader Ali Zahir
Zahir further said that they support having a Jumhooree Party candidate for running mate
The senior AP official further said that the party is willing to fully support any decisions that supplement democratic reform
Last week, the AP had called on the Joint Opposition to field a single candidate

The Adhaalath Party (AP) will support the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for presidency if he is made the party’s candidate, AP’s Ali Zahir.

Zahir, the opposition AP’s deputy leader, said that they are in support of the decision to have a single presidential ticket for parties in the Joint Opposition.

Zahir further said that they support having a Jumhooree Party candidate for running mate, given that their fellow opposition partner puts forth an acceptable candidate.

The senior AP official further said that the party is willing to fully support any decisions that supplement democratic reform in the Maldives, and ousts incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.

AP has been aligned with MDP and the Jumhooree Party since signing a coalition agreement to ‘end corruption, ensure independence of state mechanisms, and guarantee constitutional rights for all’ in 2017.

Up until Friday, MDP’s presidential candidate had been former president Mohamed Nasheed – who won the party primary with over 45,000 votes. However, Nasheed has announced his decision to relinquish the party ticket.

Last week, the AP had called on the Joint Opposition to field a single candidate claiming it necessary to ensure what they agreed to in their coalition agreement.
