The parliament is to convene on Wednesday night to vote on Justice Ahmed Abdulla Didi’s appointment to the position of Supreme Court justice.

Justice Didi’s appointment to the helm of the Supreme Court was forwarded to Maldives’ unicameral parliament, the People’s Majlis, on Tuesday.

Didi’s appointment to the position has already been approved by a parliamentary review committee.

The position of Chief Justice was left vacant after the Criminal Court sentenced Justice Abdulla Saeed to jail term, along with Justice Ali Hameed.

The prison terms effectively disqualify the justices, as per a recent amendment to the Judicature Act, leaving their seats vacant.

The arrests, trial, and sentencing of the justices have been described as unfair and politically motivated.
