The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will stand with the Joint Opposition in their reform efforts and ‘commitment to ousting a tyrannical leader’, says MDP deputy president, Mohamed Shifaz.
Shifaz, also a former parliamentarian aligned with the party, said at a program on Raajje Television on Thursday that MDP sees holding its upcoming congress as a necessary part of this.
With the elections around the corner, slated for September 23rd, Shifaz said that the party needs to make crucial decisions ahead of the polls.
The former lawmaker further said that the entire nation will witness the immense commitment the party has for its democratic reform efforts after the congress is held, from the 29th to 30th June.
Shifaz said that there is immense obstruction to the party and entirety of their opposition coalition, but guaranteed their desire to persevere regardless.
At a conference this week, the party's chair Hassan Latheef said that over 1,000 members will attend the meeting, and that they will be sending invitations to the various foreign representatives to the Maldives.
MDP is to hold its national congress on June 29-30 in Ukulhas island of Alif Alif atoll. Latheef added that all teams will be departing to Ukulhas together from capital Malé City on Friday morning. The congress is to begin at 4pm.
