Over 400 individuals are to participate in the opposition Jumhooree Party’s (JP) national congress meeting, scheduled for Thursday.
Ahmed Sameer, the party’s secretary-general, said at a press conference on Saturday that the JP had attempted to find a venue in capital city Malé to no avail.
The congress meeting is now to be held at the Paradise Island Resort, a tourist outlet operated by a company belonging to JP leader Qasim Ibrahim.
The congress is to begin on Thursday afternoon and continue into the night, when members are to attend a special assembly, the JP said. Wednesday’s was the JP council’s 115th sitting.
JP has a number of decisions to be made at the congress, including for the party’s national council to elect a presidential candidate for the party through a primary.
This decision would require the party to amend its policies. JP will also be electing individuals to 30 vacant party posts.
