Voter’s list making way for electoral fraud: Nasheed
He noted that the list does not contain ID card numbers and opens up the opportunity to repeat the same names multiple times
Responding to an opposition leader's wish for the opposition to back a ‘clean’ candidate, Nasheed said that such a candidate is “an unborn child’s navel"
He vowed MDP will put forth a candidate that is eligible to run in the election

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said the published voter’s list for the presidential ballot is making way for vote rigging.

Nasheed, who is the candidate for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), said this in a video message at the campaign launching ceremony on Thursday night.

The self-exiled opposition leader noted that the list does not contain ID card numbers and opens up the opportunity to repeat the same names multiple times.

“According to the list, eligible votes have increased by 30 to 40 percent from 2013. That’s an impossibility,” he said in the message.

Nasheed, who ran in the last two elections, said that the Elections Commission (EC) has already begun preparing to commit voter fraud.

Responding to Jumhoree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim’s wish for the opposition coalition to back a ‘clean’ candidate, Nasheed said that such a candidate is “an unborn child’s navel" and that the opposition will not be able to get a favorable result if they go along the narrow path set up by the EC.

He said that the rules and regulations in Maldives will determine what is clean and vowed that MDP will put forth a candidate that is eligible to run in the election.
