The failure of President Abdulla Yameen’s government has humiliated Maldives, says former President Mohamed Nasheed.

The opposition leader said this in a tweet on Friday after Maldives lost its bid for a seat in the United Nations Security Council.

On Friday, the United Nations (UN) held a plenary meeting to elect five non-permanent members of the Security Council. Indonesia won the seat for the Asia Pacific region for a fourth term on Friday with 144 of the 193 votes, while Maldives received 46.

In the tweet, Nasheed said that Maldives won the UN Human Rights Council seat with a record 185 votes in 2009 and that while the government began vying for the Security Council seat in 2010, it failed due to the failure of President Yameen’s administration.

Maldives had run a fierce campaign for the seat with government officials travelling to various countries to guarantee their votes. Maldives also established diplomatic relations with some African countries and had also held workshops for third-world and developing countries. Some opposition-aligned diplomats have also claimed that the Maldives government spent USD 500,000 for the campaign.
