Criminal Court sets hearing on bribery charges against SC Justices for Tuesday
The hearing has been scheduled for 12:00pm
Prosecutors claim they accepted money to alter court decisions and influence other mechanisms of the judiciary
Supreme Court justices Saeed and Hameed were arrested on February 5th

The Criminal Court has scheduled a hearing on bribery charges against Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed, for Tuesday afternoon.

The hearing has been scheduled for 12:00pm. Prosecutors claim that the top justices accepted money to alter court decisions and influence other mechanisms of the judiciary.

They allege Chief Justice Saeed used money he took from ‘conspirators working to overthrow the government’ to pay for an apartment in Malaysia’s renowned tech-town Cyberjaya. They also claim that Hameed has been accepting money from former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom for years.

Supreme Court justices Saeed and Hameed were arrested on February 5th, along with former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who they prosecutors say is a key figure in leading said conspiracy.

The government began making arrests in response to a reported coup after a contentious Supreme Court ruling to free nine unfairly detained prisoners, most of whom were political rivals or opponents of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.
