Sheikh Mohamed Didi has left the opposition Adhaalath Party to join the ruling faction of the Progressive Party of Maldives.

Sheikh Mohamed, who was previously state minister at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, was welcomed by faction leader and incumbent president Abdulla Yameen.

The sheikh resigned from his position in Yameen’s government after the Adhaalath Party ended its coalition with the ruling party.

Some 106 individuals and a senior member of a Maldivian Democratic Party branch in Feevah island of Shaviyani atoll had also signed on with the ruling party at Tuesday night’s event.
