An appeal hearing for jailed Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed have been scheduled for Sunday.

The first appeal hearing regarding the prison conviction over influence charges was held at the High Court on Thursday.

The two justices were given prison sentences of one year, seven months, and six days. Their appeal hearings are being held separately. Chief Justice Saeed’s hearing will be held at 1pm and Justice Hameed’s at 2pm.

They were convicted of influencing official duties on May 10 based on a witness testimony saying that the justices had influenced two lower court judges to issue rulings a certain way. The conviction was appealed on May 15 and hearings began eight days later.

At the first hearing, the defense questioned the integrity of the eye witnesses and read out more than a dozen objections.

High Court’s Chief Judge Abdulla Didi, Judge Abdul Ghanee Mohamed and Judge Ali Sameer are looking into their cases.

Chief Justice Saeed has also appealed the four-month 24-day prison conviction but hearings are yet to begin.
