The opposition Jumhooree Party is to hold a rally in the German city of Frankfurt, where the party’s leader is currently residing.

The rally is to begin at 09:30pm, local time, and will be livestreamed at party offices across the country, the party’s secretary-general Ahmed Sameer said.

The party’s deputy leader Ameen Ibrahim is also to participate in the rally. The party has said that a ‘prominent and important figure’ is set to sign on with them, at the rally.

The Jumhooree Party is part of the Joint Opposition, a coalition of anti-government parties working for democratic reform – that includes the Maldivian Democratic Party, the Adhaalath Party, and the Jumhooree Party.

The Maamigilli constituency MP was found guilty of bribery on August 24. Criminal Court had held the sentencing hearing at night, while Qasim was hospitalized after collapsing in court earlier that day. He was sentenced in absentia.

Since his incarceration, Qasim was granted permission to travel to Singapore in September, for medical purposes. While the 10-day medical leave was extended twice, giving him an additional 15 days, his legal team, on November 28, revealed that the business tycoon and Maamigillli constituency MP is now in Germany, having traveled there under a special permit by the German authorities.
