State Minister for Asia and the Pacific, Mark Field has said that President Abdulla Yameen using the Elections Commission (EC) to threaten opposition parties shows his 'disregard for human rights'.
In a tweet posted on Wednesday night, the Bristish MP expressed concern over reports of the Commission 'threatening to dissolve opposition parties ahead of elections', and added that this is 'another example of President Yameen's disregard for human rights'.

Furthermore, MP Field called on the relevant authorities 'to ensure elections are free, fair and inclusive'.
Earlier this week, EC threatened to dissolve the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), if its leader and co-founder, former President Mohamed Nasheed is allowed to contest in its primary elections, slated for May 30. Nasheed is the only one to have submitted candidacy for the primary.
