Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the cases of murder in the Maldives are not being investigated because the investigators were personally involved in the incidents.

The self-exiled opposition leader said this via Skype on Sunday during the inauguration ceremony of his campaign site.

Nasheed said that the number of people killed and left out in the streets of Male’ shows the chaos in the country. Noting that 26 people have been killed in the past three years, Nasheed said that most cases have not been investigated because the senior officials in the investigated bodies are personally involved in the assaults.

Responding to the Elections Commission (EC)’s statement that no one convicted of a crime can run in the presidential election, Nasheed, who was convicted of terrorism, said that he began his campaign because he believes he can run in this year’s election and that the Supreme Court has released a ruling with the approval of all five judges allowing him to run.

“I know that the ruling was reversed after President Yameen took the roof off the Supreme Court to arrest two judges inside. But we know that it has no legal basis.”

Criticizing President Yameen’s economic policy, Nasheed said that he shows impressive looking computer-generated images but has failed to establish justice and equality.
