The Islamic ministry has announced that Wednesday is the first day of Ramadan.
This was confirmed in a statement signed by Islamic minister Dr Ahmed Ziyad released after the moon observing ceremony.
In the statement, the ministry stated that, after looking into the constellations, it was predicted that the moon would have been seen in the Maldives and other Islamic countries.
Therefore, the ministry designated May 16 as the first day of the fasting month of Ramadan 1439.
After the announcement, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) gave a seven-gun salute.
