First Vice President of the current administration, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has responded to Former President Mohamed Nasheed, saying that pushing to govern through a parliamentary democracy is not the solution for the current political situation in Maldives.
When President Nasheed stated that it is evident that a presidential democracy is incompatible with the Maldivian community and that we need to implement a parliamentary democracy instead, Dr. Jameel responded by saying that what the Maldivian community needs is an honest leadership.
Dr Jameel also highlighted the importance of reforming the judiciary and law enforcement institutions, as well as bringing the necessary improvements to the Maldivian constitution.
'Pushing to govern through the parliament is not a solution', he added.
Pointing to the seven elections held under the current constitution, President Nasheed mentioned that public voting patterns from the aforementioned elections demonstrate the importance of bringing significant changes to the constitution.
Referencing to the former president's comment on changing the constitution to increase the presidency term to 6 years, Dr Jameel said that the recent changes brought to the current constitution by all the political parties, was the 'beginning of all evil'.
