Government Overthrow Case
Terror trial: Chief Justice says the charges are fabricated
Saeed denied ordering the shutdown of the Government E-Letter Management System (GEMS)
He said he had not gone against the state’s suggestions regarding the February 1 Supreme Court order

Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed has said that the whole world knows that the charges are fabricated.

The jailed justice said this at Sunday’s court hearing on obstruction charges after the presiding judge refused to accept some of the evidence presented for his defense.

At the hearing Saeed denied ordering the shutdown of the Government E-Letter Management System (GEMS) for which he was charged with obstructing the state.

He said that the Supreme Court can’t receive cases through GEMS and that he had not gone against the state’s suggestions regarding the February 1 Supreme Court order.

Chief Justice Saeed was arrested at the courthouse on February 5, the night President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency. Saeed is being accused of obstructing the state, accepting bribes, and attempting to overthrow the government by ordering authorities to release political prisoners and reinstate opposition MPs to parliament through a Supreme Court order on February 1.
