JP leader calls on police and prosecutors to release ex-President Maumoon
Qasim said this on a post on his Twitter account

Jumhooree Party leader, and Maamigili constituency MP, Qasim Ibrahim has called on the Maldives Police Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office to release fellow opposition partner Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, primarily owing to his deteriorating health condition.

Qasim, who has been living abroad after being targeted for prosecution since his heel-faced-turn against incumbent President Abdulla Yameen, said this on a post on his Twitter account.

The post, typed out in Dhivehi, translates to ‘today marks thirty days since 82-year-old [former] President Maumoon arrest and detention and due to worsening health condition, JP calls on [the] MPS and PG to release him, at least for medical care’.

Former president Maumoon has been accused of obstruction of justice, bribery, and terrorism by ‘conspiring to overthrow the government’. He has been in incarceration since early February.

The former strongman has been diagnosed with a form of vertigo disease brought on by age and doctors have advised that collapses are likely and that a caretaker must be with him at all times to ensure it does not injure him.
