The Criminal Court has concluded Sunday’s hearing for the obstruction of justice charges put forth against Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, where the judge heard testimonies in his defence.
The chief justice’s lawyers said after the hearing held at 10:00am on Sunday, that it is likely that the next hearing in the matter will be held for sentencing. Saeed is potentially facing a jail term of four months and 24 days, if the presiding judge finds him guilty.
Saeed is accused of having barred the Supreme Court from recieving letters addressed to it, by ordering the cessation of incoming messages through the state’s Government E-Letter Management System (GEMS). He has denied the charges in full, and denounced them as inadequete and unfounded.
The apex court adjudicator is also facing allegations of terrorism for ‘conspiring to overthrow the government’.
He was arrested alongside Supreme Court justice Ali Hameed, who is also facing charges for which a hearing had been set for Sunday as well.
