Maldives' judiciary is in need of urgent overhaul: MP Imthiyaz Fahmy
MP Imthiyaz said that anti-terrorism act is yet to be used against a potentially dangerous criminal
Fahmy said that there are a number of discrepancies in the judicial process

Maldives’ judiciary is in urgent need of urgent overhaul and if it is to regain public trust, MP Imthiyaz Fahmy has said.

Fahmy said this while speaking at an opposition rally held at the Jumhooree Party headquarters in capital city Malé.

Fahmy said that there are a number of discrepancies in the judicial process, such as individuals being arrested for a different crime than the one they are tried for.

The lawmaker further said that the government has been deliberately using laws to and procedures to penalize individuals that express discontent with ‘their tyranny’.

As such, the lawmaker noted how the Criminal Court had imposed a travel ban on him on the 22nd April, a copy of which was not provided to him as required by law.

MP Imthiyaz said that anti-terrorism act is yet to be used against a potentially dangerous criminal but has instead been used against the current government political rivals.
