Maldivian authorities have thus far proven to have been negligent of their duty to protect human rights defenders in not having taken any action to guarantee justice for murdered writer Yameen Rasheed, says Amnesty International and CIVICUS.
A joint statement from both international non-profit organizations said that Maldivian authorities had ‘failed to protect’ Yameen during ‘his lifetime’ and in finding the culprits behind is brutal murder.
“One year later, we have seen no action from the Maldivian authorities, they have also failed to effectively investigate his murder and hold his killers accountable. His loved ones and friends should not have to wait any longer for justice” the statement reads.
Monday marks a year since Yameen was found butchered to death at his home in capital city Malé. He was found in the stairwell of his home with over 32 stab wounds to his chest and neck.
