An officer of the Maldives Police Service was injured on Sunday night, in an act of assault with a sharp object, that occurred at the Carnival area in Henveiru ward of capital city Malé.

The police’s spokesperson said that the officer had sustained injuries to his back and nape and that there were visible signs of blunt force assault prior to the attack.

The officer was treated at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and has since been released. The police did not specify whether or not any arrests had been made.

Specifically, the act occurred near the construction site for a multi-storey mosque under construction in the area. The police are investigating the matter.
