The European Union’s statement on Thursday calling on the Maldivian government to ensure several rights for its citizens is completely welcomed, save for the call to grant religious freedom, says former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Nasheed said this in a post on his Twitter account, following the European Union’s election follow-up mission’s report on Thursday. The report put forth several observations on the Maldivian electoral process.
The EU has proposed 29 recommendations for free and fair elections. Maldivians find one of these recommendations - religious freedom - difficult to accept. The remaining recommendations are vital and must be implemented. We welcome the EU statement.

Thursday’s report further said that neither the government nor the People’s Majlis nor the opposition have sought to address the issue of electoral reforms’ and that ‘progress was limited in the implementation of the recommendations’.
