Prominent lawyer Husnu Suood said it was unlawful for the Civil Court to reject a negligence case against the police service over the brutal murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed.
The lawyer said this during an appeal hearing at the High Court, while representing Yameen’s family.
Yameen’s father Hussain Rasheed filed the case alleging that the police service had neglecting to follow through on the multiple death threats Yameen had reported. The Civil Court rejected the case after claiming that the National Integrity Commission (NIC) has the authority to look into such cases.
At the hearing on Sunday, Husnu Suood said that the Supreme Court had released a circular stating that the Civil Court can look into negligence cases, and that the NIC only investigates cases regarding individual police officers and not the entire police service.
Suood requested the High Court to rule that the Civil Court is allowed to accept the case.
