The Local Government Authority (LGA) has suspended members of Dhevvadhoo island’s council and threatened to disband it all together.
Two members of the Gaafu Alif Atoll island’s local government council was told this week that their statement over a contentious Supreme Court ruling is out of procedural ambit.
The LGA warned that if such incidents recur then the entirety of the council will be subject to disbandment.
LGA’s statement also says that the council does not have the authority to release such a statement, which called on the government to enforce the ruling to release nine ‘unfairly’ detained prisoners.
The LGA has placed heavy restrictions on Ibrahim Thaufeeq, the deputy chair of the island’s council, and he has been suspended without pay, effective April 8th onwards.
Thaufeeq has also been asked not to represent the Dhevvadhoo council in any way until his suspension is lifted.
LGA has suspended council members of a number of islands, who called for the Supreme Court ruling on February 1st to be enforced.
