Prominent human rights and democracy activist Shahinda Ismail has again beeen questioned by the police over an alleged anti-Islamic tweet.
Shahinda, executive director of the Maldives Democracy Network, was previously summoned at the police headquarters in Malé and questioned about the matter as well.
The Maldives Police Service is questioning her on the grounds of her ‘attempting to disrupt religious unity’ in the Maldives, a crime defined in Artcile 617 of the penal code.
Shahinda, formerly also the chief of the Police Integrity Commission, had responded to President Abdulla Yameen having said he would not allow any ‘other religion in the Maldives’, by pointing out that ‘Religions other than Islam only exist’ because of God's will.
