Mariyam Shunana, a state counsel at the Attorney General’s Office, has resigned.
Shunana, who was one of the employees at the office that took a stand against the government’s contentious decision to extend Maldives’ state of emergency, did not specify a reason for her resignation, but noted that it 'was a very difficult decision'.
It was a very difficult decision to resign from AGO where I have worked for around 10 yrs. But, this was necessary & I hope to do some good out there serving public. Will always cherish overwhelming love & respect staffs of AGO had given me.

Two days prior to her resignation, she sent out this tweet:
A state lawyer should not be a “hired gun” who is there to defend unconstitutional act of public officials or state entities. But rather, they have a higher burden and duty to uphold and protect law and rights of citizens of state. #legalethics.

A number of employees at the Attorney General’s Office had advised Attorney General Mohamed Anil against extending the state of emergency announced in February.
RaajjeMV was informed of this by a source from within the office, who reported that the petition garnered 25 signatures.
