Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom remains steadfast despite remaining behind bars for 50 days, said his lawyer.

After their meeting in Dhoonidhoo island prison on Tuesday, Lawyer Maumoon Hameed said that the 80-year-old statesman remains resolute in the face of injustice and oppression.

The lawyer also said that Gayoom will remain steadfast in the reform efforts, even if no one else will.

Gayoom was arrested on February 5, the night President Abdulla Yameen declared the State of Emergency, and has been remanded for the remainder of his trial.

He has since been charged with terrorism for allegedly attempting to overthrow the government by bribing the Supreme Court justices to issue the February 1 order to release nine political prisoners and reinstate 12 opposition MPs.

Others terror suspects include Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, Justice Ali Hameed, the former president's son MP Faris Maumoon and son-in-law Mohmaed Nadheem.
